Wheeler set to get back to
playing physical football
By Charles Burney
MDJ Sports Writer
Wheeler has struggled the last
couple of seasons, but its last postseason
appearance was only three
years ago.
The Wildcats are 4-15 over their
last two seasons, but the coaches
and players believe they are not
far from getting back to the playoffs.
More importantly, they are
focused on the pathways of developing
the present and building
a future instead of dwelling
on that past.
Coach Bryan Love said he wants
his players to be tough on the inside
and outside through a long
offseason program.
“They’ve been working really
hard since last January, when we
started the offseason program.,”
Love said. “But (I’m) excited to see
the strength and gains that they’ve
made. We have over 30 people in
the 1,000 pound member club. So
we’re very excited about that. It
lets us play a very physical brand
of football.”
Love is also focused on his players
gaining critical social life skills
through the sport.
“You know, there’s going to be a
winner and a loser,” he said. “But
I want to make sure my players,
when they do leave me here at
Wheeler High School, that (they’ll)
have great characteristics. That
they are a winner in life as well.
That they win on and off the field.
That they have great characteristics
to be a great husband and a
great father.”
He said he hopes to rely on an
experienced senior class.
“I’m excited to see these seniors,”
Love said. “We have 15
seniors this year, and ( I’m excited
to see) the maturation process of
them ( growing) and our offensive
and defensive schemes to see them
take the wishing and be able to
help us be successful on the field
on Friday nights.”
Some who will lead the defense
include defensive lineman Ty Holiday,
who had 6 1 tackles and seven
sacks last season. Linebacker Alexander
Courtney, had 75 tackles,
three sacks and an interception.
Linebacker Julian Stevenson had
89 tackles and two sacks, and defensive
lineman Renardo Lewis
finished with 59 tackles and seven
sacks.
Starting quarterback Marcus
Romain returns for his junior season.
In 2021, he completed 33 of
83 passes for 49 8 yards and two
touchdowns with three interceptions,
adding 38 carries for 255
yards and two touchdowns on
the ground.
Running back Josiah Allen rushed
for 435 yards on 69 carries as
a freshman, and returns for his
sophomore season.
Love said the coaching staff will
employ the same schemes on both
sides of the ball, providing continuity
for the entire team.
“We want to try to be as balanced
as we can by running and
throwing the football, because I
think it helps us out offensively,”
he said. “I think that, in today’s
game now, people want to try to
push the ball vertically down the
field as much as they can. You
know defenses are going to try
to bring as much pressure as we
can to speed the quarterback up
and get you in long distance (and)
long yardage situations.”
