Warriors enter ’22 season
with only one goal in mind
By Stuart Steele
MDJ Sports Writer
Coming off two straight 10-2 seasons,
with a pair of second-round
playoff losses, the goal for North
Cobb is clear heading into 2022 –
win a state championship.
“Every year that’s the goal, you want
to reach the pinnacle, but at the same
time you don’t want to dwell on it so
much,” coach Shane Q ueen said. “I
think last year, we may have talked
about that too much instead of taking
it one week at a time.”
This season will be the culmination
of a senior class led by quarterback
Malachi Singleton. The Arkansas
commit was excellent in his junior
year, completing 73% of his passes
for 2,348 yards and 24 touchdowns
with j ust three interceptions. He also
added 16 0 carries for 1,037 rushing
yards and 25 touchdowns.
Q ueen said that Singleton’s presence
alone makes the players around him
better, instilling a belief in the team
that any game is winnable.
“When he walks on the field, everybody
on the field gets an inch taller,
even as a head coach because you
know what he stands for and what he’s
done,” Q ueen said. “He’s won at every
level, and I don’t care if we went
up against the G eorgia Bulldogs, he
feels like North Cobb’s got a chance
to win this football game. And if his
teammates believe that, then we can
play with anybody.”
Singleton also has plenty of weapons
around him to help keep the offense
on track, with Michigan commit
Ben Hall and explosive junior
David Eziomume as two key pieces
of the puzzle. Hall ran for 543 yards
and seven touchdowns last season,
while Eziomume had 136 yards and
a touchdown while adding 12 receptions
for 147 yards. Singleton,
Hall and Ezioumume all lined up
together will create headaches for
defensive coaches.
“I would hate to be a defense
coordinator. You know, trying to
defend all that,” Q ueen said. “You
put seven in the box, Malachi can
beat you with his arm, you put
six in a box or five in the box and
Malichi out can beat you with his
legs, then you got Ben that can
run over people and score a lot of
touchdowns, and you’ve got David
that can do both.”
The loss of talented receivers De’Nylon
Morrisette, Reggie G ivhan and
Sam Mbake is a concern for the offense,
but Q ueen said he’s confident
in players like Hillgrove transfer
X avier Jackson, TJ Smith and Elij
ah Lee to contribute in the passing
game. Jackson had 6 receptions for
46 yards, Smith caught eight passes
for 78 yards, and Lee played JV
last season.
Defensively, linebacker G rayson
Hodges returns after posting 96
tackles in his sophomore season
to anchor the middle of the defense.
Duke commit Q uentin Ajiero
brings a tenacity in the secondary
as a physical cornerback on the
outside. Phillip G ladney, Jordan
Lonas and Cayden Trotter will also
help round out the secondary for
the Warriors.
North Cobb’s talented roster will
face the toughest schedule in Cobb
County, facing teams with a combined
winning percentage of .6 40.
This group will be battle-tested before
region play begins, and will look
to keep the game-by-game mindset
all year.
“I want our guys to just enjoy one
week at a time,” Q ueen said. “This
group of seniors has been together
a long time and it’ll be over in a
split second.”
