Indians to go as far as new
QB Kinney takes them
By Thomas Ashworth
MDJ Sports Writer
Despite taking home the Region
2AAAAAAA championship after losing
j ust one game in region play last
season, McEachern looks to come
back even stronger as they turn to
old and new faces across the team.
O ne of these new faces will be
at the quarterback position, with
j unior Jaydon K inney looking to
claim McEachern’s starting quarterback
job.
K inney will take over for former
McEachern quarterback and reigning
Region 2AAAAAAA O ffensive Player
of the Year Bryce Archie, who signed
with Coastal Carolina.
“Jaydon K innney, he’s going to
be the quarterback,” Coach Franklin
Stephens said. “In this day and
age, you have got to have a quarterback.
For us, we’re really going to go
as Jaydon goes. If the quarterback is
playing well, we’re probably going
to play well.
“He runs well enough to be a running
threat when we want to run
him,” He’s got enough arm strength
to throw the ball. The big thing for
him is confidence and experience.
There’s only one way to get that, and
that’s by playing.”
Last season, the tandem of wide
receivers K aleb Webb and Savion
West combined for 1,89 1 yards and
20 touchdowns, as Webb led the way
with almost 1,500 of those yards.
With Webb graduating and signing
with the Tennessee V olunteers,
Stephens and company will turn
to West to become the team’s No.
1 receiver.
“O ur big contributor is going to be
Savion West,” Stephens said. “We had
K aleb Webb last year, he was a phenomenal
football player and went up
to Tennessee, Savion was kind of like
the Robin to Batman. Now, Savion
is getting his opportunity.”
While having a plethora of players
in McEachern’s running back
room, Stephens said he would like
to see one of these players step
into a leadership position as they
prepare for the season.
“We’ve got a stable of running backs,”
Stephens said. “We’ve got four or five
guys. I would like for one of the guys
to grow into the lead guy.”
Protecting K inney will be a grownup
offensive line, which feature a
group of faces Stephens watched grow
throughout their time at McEachern.
“We’re going to put a lot of emphasis
on our offensive line,” Stephens
said. “We felt like those guys should
be the strength of our team. They’ve
been babies for the last year, year and
a half. Now, all of a sudden, those juniors
have gotten the chance to grow
up. They’ve got some size on them,
they’re strong now, they played a lot
of football together. We’re expecting
our offensive line to be pretty good
this year.”
This group will feature seniors O vie
Dubre and Tametrius Hunt along with
j uniors Ivan K ynes, Leon Wesley and
Parker Mclendon.
Defensive back Daniel James has
gotten offers from schools including
K ansas State and North Carolina
State, but the secondary will
feature a lot of unfamiliar faces.
“The secondary is where a lot of
the newness is happening,” Stephens
said. “We lost four good players out
of the secondary last year. Danny
James is one of the guys that’s returning,
he played a bunch for us
back there last year, and he’s picked
up some offers this summer. He’s a
j unior, and he’s probably going to
anchor the secondary.”
