Improvement has Grizzlies
set for deep playoff run
By Griffin Callaghan
gcallaghan@cherokeetribune.com
Three straight years of improvement
has Creekview and fourthyear
coach Trevor Williams in for
a big 2022 season.
The G rizzlies went 8-3 overall
last season with a third-place 6 -2
record in Region 7AAAAAA. They
made the playoffs for the second
straight year, but fell to Carrollton
in the first round.
The team graduated starting
quarterback Mason Hicks and the
majority of its receiving corps, but
with returning players including
Michael Roach and Camden Lusk,
who combined for 10 catches, 121
yards and a touchdown, the G rizzlies
do have experience.
“Even though they were not
necessarily starters, we feel good
about having guys who have been
in the fire,” Williams said. “They
have experienced the lights on
Friday night.”
O n the defensive side, Creekview
also lost some key players, but it returns
Cherokee County Co-Defensive
Player of the Year Isaac Hubert.
Teams were forced to game plan
against Hubert, specifically, last
year because of his disruption at
the line of scrimmage.
The G rizzlies held their opponents
to 14 points per game in
2021 and tallied three shutouts
against Centennial, Chattahoochee
and Woodstock.
“We have a lot of starters back
on that side of the ball,” Williams
said. “We have experience, even in
the backup spots. When you lose
the caliber of players like Ty Hubert
and Cale Williams, they are
hard to replace. We need guys to
step into those leadership roles.”
Creekview remains in Class
AAAAAA for the 2022 season but
switched to Region 6AAAAAA
with four other Cherokee County
teams: Etowah, River Ridge,
Sequoyah and Woodstock. Williams
believes the key to success
in this classification starts with
the offensive line.
“If you want to win in the state
of G eorgia, you better play well
up front,” Williams said. “Four
out of five on our offensive front
have significant experience on
Friday nights.”
The G rizzlies have some new
faces at running back, with former
workhorse Tyler Stevens moving
on to the Air Force Academy.
Stevens accounted for 9 25 yards
and 14 touchdowns last season
on the ground.
Creekview has new faces in its
running back room, mixed with
Isaac Hubert, who is expected to
take on a more prominent role as
a two-way player. Hubert was the
G rizzlies’ third-ranked rusher last
year with 221 yards and a pair of
touchdowns.
The G rizzlies’ j unior class is
expected to be impactful, highlighted
by linebacker Reed Anderson
and Trey Thomas, both
of whom recorded nine tackles
for loss one year ago.
The 6 -foot-6 , 26 0-pound tackle
Andrew Rosinksi is also a member
of Creekview’s junior class
and will lead a sizeable unit up
front. He helped keep the pocket
clean for Hicks last season, while
paving the way for Stevens’ big
season on the ground.
At quarterback, sophomore Austin
G uest steps into the spotlight
to replace the former starter, Mason
Hicks. G uest played eight
games during the 2021 season,
completing 18 of 37 passes for
200 yards, one touchdown and
two interceptions.
