Walker rebuilding with
non-region schedule
By Joi Palmore
MDJ Sports Writer
Tom Evangelista, Walker interim
head coach, decided to play a non-region
schedule for the 2022 season.
The decision was made to allow
the team to safely compete with a
young and short roster. The Wolverines
had only 24 players on their
roster at press time.
“We don’t have a lot number-wise,”
Evangelista said. “Twenty-four players
on the varsity team, but those
24 players want to play football
and that’s the best part.”
Evangelista said this decision is
not a permanent move. The overall
goal is to go back to region play the
next time the G eorgia High School
Association does the region realignment
in 2024.
“The short term benefit is, it’s
going to allow our kids to have
more success, which I think is going
to grow the program,” Evangelista
said.
The Wolverines have had four
different coaches within the last
four years and Evangelista wants
to add continuity to the program.
“We want to really emphasize that
being on this team is part of being a
family and we are treating all of our
programs the same from our varsity
all the way down to our B-team
middle school,” Evangelista said.
The past two seasons the Wolverines
have gone 1-9 . However,
Evangelista is not worried about
wins or losses.
“Whether we win a game or lose
a game, it’s all about how we go out
there and compete and play with
great effort.” Evangelista said. “My
goal is for us to be a hard-nosed
football team that plays hard and
gets better week to week. That’s
our that’s literally our only goal,
the wins and losses will take care
of itself. We’ve told the kids that
from the start. So that’s the deal.”
Despite the low numbers, 14
players are returners. Evangelista
expects his returners to be key
contributors.
DJ and Tae Washington were firstyear
players last season. The Washingtons
— like nearly everyone on the
roster — will contribute on both sides
of the football. The juniors will be running
backs and linebackers. There is
the possibility of DJ Washington also
playing quarterback.
Continued growth of juniors
Brandon Tarbeart, Q uinn K eskonis,
G avin Johnson, and Micheal
Milligan will be essential. Evangelista
said Tarbeart played a reserve
role last season on the offensive
and defensive line.
K eskonis, a transfer from Walton,
has shown leadership and will
j oin Tarbeart on the line.
Evangelista said he anticipates
Johnson, a wide receiver and outside
linebacker, to be a leader considering
the positivity he’s shown during
the summer. Milligan will play running
back and safety or linebacker.
Evangelista said he is one of the most
athletic players on the team.
The team has three seniors, Miguel
V alentin, Harry Ann, and Alex
V an Etten. Two of the three linemen
played football for the first
time last season. Evangelista says
he is proud V alentin and Ann, who
are also members of the wrestling
team, for sticking with football,
and he is interested to see how
their games continue to advance.
“The history of Walker football
has kind of been up and down, the
biggest goal for us right now is to
try to build a program that is sustainable,”
Evangelista said. “I am
super excited about the opportunity
that the administration has given
me here to put my imprint on it.”
