Harrison set to close
the gap in 3AAAAAAA
By Matthew Welsh
MDJ Sports Writer
Harrison is seeking its first winning
season since 2019 , when the team
won the Class AAAAAA state title.
Since that memorable campaign,
the team has gone 8-14 and has
not advanced beyond the second
round of the playoffs.
With that, coach Josh Cassidy,
who is entering his second year as
Harrison’s head man, thinks a veteran
team, spearheaded by 13 seniors
can help right the ship in 2022.
“You know, for us right now, our
theme is to close the gap,” Cassidy
said. “It’s not necessarily where we
finished last year, or what we did
yesterday, but what we’re doing
today to move closer towards that
overall goal, as a program that’s
consistently competing for championships
both region and state.”
Harrison remains in the newlook
Region 3AAAAAAA. Leaving
the region are Walton and North
Cobb, and coming home after a
two-year absence is McEachern,
to rejoin its west Cobb rivals. The
Hoyas final four games of the regular
season are all region contests,
including closing with North
Paulding, Hillgrove and Marietta,
all of whom they played last year.
A big question for Harrison is who
will start at quarterback. Cassidy said
three candidates in senior Brennan
Burcato, j unior Braylan Ford and sophomore
X avier Hill have all competed
for the spot. He said all three exhibited
strengths ranging from pocket
decisions to dual-threat ability, and
the final decision will be made closer
to the start of the season.
That said, Harrison also has a
solid structure of returning starters
on both sides of the ball, which
Cassidy said can be relied on in
pressure situations.
Senior linebacker Holden Trice and
his 9 8 tackles from last year, return
to the middle of the Hoya defense.
Another senior in Tyler Wells, who
had 77 tackles last year, will blanket
him at safety. Senior Alex Perry
should feature as a running and
pass-catching back out of the backfield
after finishing with 17 receptions
and rushing attempts last year.
The talented duo of senior
Reggie Brigman and junior Brady
K luse anchor Harrison’s wide receiving
corps, after combining for
859 receiving yards last season.
Cassidy said that the team has
embraced a holistic push to consistency,
focusing on contributions
from all levels of the team.
“It could be a ninth grader or a
12th grader, but as far as, having
senior leadership or upperclassmen
we really pinpoint people who are
doing the right thing on the field and
off the field and it doesn’t matter
to us who they are,” Cassidy said.
In the team’s effort to be more
competitive this season, Cassidy
said during the offseason, his squad
has emphasized a commitment to
being responsible, accountable and
“uncommon” on the football field.
Alongside those qualities, he
also said schemes will remain relatively
consistent from the previous
year. With the offensive operating
out of a hybrid and shotgun
look, while the defense caters to
its strength up the middle.
“For us, we’ve got a toolbox and
when you open that thing up, there’s
plenty of things that we can do,”
said Cassidy. “I do believe based
on what our guys have done from
the end of last season until now,
we can be competitive. So, we’re
prepared to compete for region
championships and that’s our motivation
moving forward.”
