Goal at Lassiter to return
team to postseason play
By Stuart Steele
MDJ Sports Writer
The 2021 season was one of
legitimate progress for Lassiter,
as the team posted a 4-6 record,
which was its best finish since
the 2017 season.
Now, heading into coach Sean
Thom’s fourth season at the helm,
the goal is to break the team’s
playoff drought, which dates
back to 2016
“That’s our vision, that’s what
it boils down to, you think ‘What
do you want to accomplish? ’
It’s the playoffs. You want to
be able to get to the dance and,
( we were) close last year, not
good enough. So that’s our expectation.”
The Trojans’ offense is led by
a pair of Division I commits in
quarterback Bryson Harrison
and left tackle Ethan Mackenny.
Harrison will be heading to
G eorgia State following his senior
year while Mackenny will
attend G eorgia Tech.
“( Mackenny) j ust bought in
and every year he’s gotten a
little better and, you know, we
really challenged him last year
and said, ‘Look, if you want to
be the man, you got to start acting
like a man,’” Thom said. “I
think that has carried over into
his daily habits in the weight
room, how he takes care of his
body, how he eats.”
Mackenny leads an experienced
offensive line that returns
all five starters from 2021, providing
stability up front for the
offense. Mackenny will also play
along the defensive line after
posting four sacks last season.
Harrison, playing in a new
offense, completed 114 of 211
passes last season for 1,200 yards
with eight touchdowns and eight
interceptions and added seven
touchdowns on the ground.
Thom said he believes playing
in the same offensive scheme for
the second year in a row will help
the unit produce in 2022.
The personnel on the defensive
side of the ball will look a
lot different, particularly at the
linebacker position.
“It’s going to be hard to fill the
shoes of Palmer Bowling, he’s going
to Reinhardt, K aiser K haja
are two guys that were two-and
three-year starters,” Thom said.
“We’ve got safety Evan Scherer
who’s a two-year starter, he’s
going to drop down to the linebacker
role.”
Another position with a lot
of turnover from last season
is wide receiver. The Trojans
lost both starting receivers
from last year in Cullen English
and Danny Curran. Curran
was the team’s most productive
offensive player with
66 catches for 851 yards and
five touchdowns.
“I don’t know if you really
replace him,” Thom said.
“But, you know, we had a lot
of good guys behind him. A
lot of young guys that maybe
didn’t get as much experience
because we had Danny.
But we’ve got Shaw Mixon,
he’s going to be one of them
who’s going do a good job for
us. I’m trying to think, Michael
O ’Brien was a sophomore
last year, so our rising
j unior class has got two or
three receivers that are going
to get meaningful time.”
