playing both at the
next level.
“My mom has told me she
would like me to play both if
I could,” G ermain said. “But
if it’s too hard on the body, or
the school aspects get too hard
and I’m not getting the grades
I should be getting then I think
I would personally choose one
sport. I don’t know which.”
G ermain isn’t just a multisport
athlete for Mount Paran,
he plays both ways in football as
a linebacker and running back.
In 2021, G ermain rushed 51
times for 550 yards and five
touchdowns, averaging the highest
yards per carry (10.8) of any
player in the county with more
than 10 carries. He added 71
tackles and an interception on
the defensive side of the ball,
playing a rover role as a safety
in the box.
“We have a lot of people doing
it and I’m j ust trying to win,
trying to win for the team, do
what’s best for the team,” G ermain
said. “If it’s the best thing
for me to play both sides of the
ball then I’ll put my body on
the line.”
Mount Paran coach Matt Ely
said G ermain’s ability to be dedicated
and successful in both his
sports has provided a blueprint
for what he’ll expect out of twosport
athletes going forward.
“Nick’s not a football player
that plays baseball, and he’s not
a baseball player that plays football,”
Ely said. “He genuinely is
a baseball player and a football
player. The work he’s done this
summer, to be all in for both.
I mean he tells me about some
of his weekends and baseball,
and he’s here at 7 a.m. Monday
morning lifting and running.
I’m like ‘I don’t know how you
do it.’ He has j ust really set the
example of how you can be great
at both.”
Mount Paran baseball coach
K yle Reese said G ermain is a
perfectionist and a leader for
his teams.
“He’s probably his own worst
critic, which most good athletes
are but just a good teammate,
a guy that’s really talented
in both sports,” Reese said.
“He’s always pulling for his
teammates and helping guys
work hard as well. He leads by
example, but he’s not afraid to
speak up as well.”
G ermain said he has high expectations
for his performance
on both sides of the ball this
season, as he’ll feature heavily
in both of his positions.
“As a running back, hopefully
because last year I split the
time with two other running
backs, hopefully I can get two
times the yards I had last year
with more playing time,” G ermain
said. “Then, for outside
linebacker, I j ust want to be
all over it, having tackles from
everywhere, having sacks, tackles
for loss, fumbles and interceptions.
I only had one interception
last year and I had the
chance to have a couple more
but I didn’t get them, so I hope
for that.”
