Spartans in position
to take next big step
By Joi Palmore
MDJ Sports Writer
Campbell continues to make
progress under coach Howie De-
Cristofaro.
After going winless in 2019 and
2-8 in 2020. the Spartans record
improved to and 3-6 in 2021. The
team was a couple of bounces away
from another win and a possible
run at a playoff spot. This season
could be the year Campbell returns
to being a winning program.
“We’re big, strong, fast and athletic
right now, it’s just the will to
win,” DeCristofaro said. “It has to
be brought to the surface.”
In addition to improvement on the
field, there have been capital improvements
for the program. A new weight
room and equipment have helped
maintain growth and team morale.
“You got to make sure ( the players)
are happy, you got to make
sure that the program is what they
want out of it,” DeCristofaro said.
The upgrades, in addition to
players seeing improvement translating
into potential scholarship
offers. should help keep all parties
interested.
“I think that if people see you
can get offers from colleges playing
here then they’ll want to stay
here,” DeCristofaro said.
G rant Fielder and Tywon Wray
Jr. each have several Division I
offers and DeCristofaro said he
expects the duo to be key players
this upcoming season. Fielder,
the 6 -foot-2, 235-pound defensive
lineman, had 28 tackles and
four sacks last season. Wray Jr.
is expected to be a starting safety
and wide receiver.
“We were young last year. We
actually were good at the beginning,
but we kind of tailed off at
the end, but Fielder will be huge
for us.” DeCristofaro said. “Wray
Jr., K eshon Collins, and O nyebuchi
Elukeme will be big for us. I think
Jalen Shelton and Amare Henderson
will be huge. I think our defensive
line will be the strength
of the defense. I thought we were
really good up front, we needed
some more help in the secondary,
which I think we’ve got,”
Collins, Shelton ( 26 tackles),
Elukeme ( 22 tackles, 3 sacks)
and Henderson (17 tackles) will
also be key parts of the defense.
The offense will have a new
look thanks to new offensive coordinator
Derek Cook, but it will
still be led by quarterback Luke
Marble ( 881 passing yards, 9 TD)
and his dual-threat ability.
“I expect a big year,” DeCristofaro
said. “He started his last two
games as a freshman and started
every game last year as a sophomore.
I think that he’s going to
have a breakout year this year.”
Braden Hayden will be the team’s
starting running back. The 6 -1,
230-pound sophomore will bring
size and speed to the game. De-
Cristofaro also has Jakob Fowler,
Eathan Jefferson, and Chirone Dixion
as the teams’ speed merchants.
“I think we have more depth at
running back than we’ve ever had
since I’ve been here. So that’s going
to help us a lot,” DeCristofaro said.
The Spartans will face new teams
this season due to realignment. Carrollton
and Westlake are new additions
to Region 2AAAAAAA. While
the teams are traditional powers,
DeCristofaro said the players will
put their uniform on the same way.
“We j ust take them one game
at a time, and I know that is a cliche,
but you start looking too far
ahead that you lose focus on what
is in front of you right now,” De-
Cristofaro said.
