Pope enters new season
with youth movement
By Adam Carrington
MDJ Sports Correspondent
Pope’s goals of winning a region
championship and making
the state playoffs stay the same
each year. It doesn’t matter if it
is a team full of seniors or underclassmen.
The G reyhounds, who were
a playoff team in three of the
past five seasons, find themselves
dealing with the latter
in 2022.
There will be new faces at running
back competing to replace
1,000-yard rusher Phil Sims. The
lineup at wide receiver will also
be different with the exception
of senior Sosuke Watanabe.
The offensive line will consist
of younger players and the
entire secondary is open for
competition with no starters
returning.
As summer workouts draw to a
close, coach Tab G riffin said this
year’s squad is one of the most
athletic teams he’s worked with
and that the chemistry among
his sophomores is strong.
“They are a very close-knit
bunch,” G riffin said of his team.
“They’re going to go out there and
believe that they can win every
game and every play. Whether
it happens or not, at least they
are not going out there with the
mindset that of we’re going to
get beat.”
While they may be young,
one key position where they
return a starter is quarterback
Patrick Lowe. The senior
is entering his second season
as a starter and is expected to
be more versed in Pope’s new
spread offense that requires
him to throw the ball.
He adapted well last season
after Pope changed its offense,
completing 123 of 221 pass attempts
for 1,853 yards and 15
touchdowns.
Lowe will also rely on Watanabe,
a possession receiver who
is counted on to play a bigger
role after posting just 19 3 receiving
yards last season and
two touchdowns.
Junior Ethan Brinkman is a
newcomer who will join Watanabe
at receiver along with senior
Logan Rapp and sophomore
John Stuetzer.
Senior V inny Cantando is expected
to play key roles at both
running back and linebacker
this season. Seniors X avier
Holland and Patrick Burns
are anchoring a revamped line
that gave up j ust two sacks out
of 45 pass attempts in Pope’s
spring game.
Defensively, senior Dan Ward
is shifting from fullback to the
defensive line. Junior Jaiden
G rimes is also a front runner
to start on the line with other
open positions expecting to be
a revolving door among the offensive
line that includes junior
Adam Norwood and sophomore
Max Fumerton.
Senior Trent G odfrey and sophomores
Nick Chao and Enzo
Thompson had solid offseasons
at linebacker alongside Cantando
with the secondary positions
still up for grabs.
