Reinhardt ready to attack
tough opening schedule
By Griffin Callaghan
gcallaghan@cherokeetribune.com
After being forced to play two
seasons nearly back-to-back in
the spring and summer of 2021,
Reinhardt is ready to attack a set
of challenging opponents to begin
its 2022 schedule.
The Eagles have won nine games
for four straight seasons, including
when it appeared in the 2019
NAIA Football national nhampionship
game. Coming off a 9 -3
showing and another playoff year,
coach James Miller has a lot of
confidence in his returning squad.
“O ur back seven on defense
is as good as it has ever been,”
Miller said. “We are deep, and
we have played in a lot of football
games. We have a lot of experience,
and I am really excited
about this group.”
The clear differentiator from
years past is the subtraction of
former starting quarterback
Billy Hall. It is a maj or blow to
the Eagles’ offense, and Miller
said Hall is likely the greatest
player in Reinhardt’s football
history.
Like many positions on the team,
the Eagles still have an experienced
player taking over quarterback
duties in senior Hunter
Arters. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound
Arters, although sparingly, did see
the field last season. He completed
5-of-11 passes for 134 yards
in the fall.
Miller is ready to see what his
new starting quarterback can do.
“I like Arters, and he is experienced,”
Miller said. “He has been
in our program. He has a moxy
about him. He may not have a
strong arm or be as fast as Billy,
but he is a great leader and a
quick decision maker.”
Miller believes Arters’ competitiveness
and intangibles set him
apart leading into the season, and
he gives Reinhardt a chance to win.
Aside from Hall, the Eagles
brought back a significant chunk
of their core. Leading receiver Navarie
Solomon returns after posting
9 23 yards and 13 touchdowns
last season as Hall’s go-to target.
“Navarie Solomon is a big weapon
for us,” Miller said. “He is a
really good player that can make
plays in the air for us. He finds a
way to get things done.”
Running back Devyn Collins
led a talented running back room
with 811 yards and 13 touchdowns
on 149 carries.
Bryce Burgess is another of
Reinhardt’s top returning rushers.
He took 32 carries for 121
yards and five touchdowns last
year. Between Burgess, Collins
and others, another strong year
from the Eagles’ rushers would go
a long way toward helping Arters
get comfortable.
All-American left tackle John
Cano will lead the Reinhardt front
again, with Josh Chastain returning
from injury to form what Miller
expects to be among the team’s
strongest units.
“It is huge to have these veterans
around (Arters),” Miller
said. “We have all these guys
around who can make plays.
We tell him to make the simple
play and to make good decisions.
He does not have to do
anything crazy.”
The Eagles open the 2022 season
on the road against Faulkner,
which made for one of its toughest
wins of last year. They host
Bethel in Week 2, which was one
of their three losses. Miller said
both teams will be ranked in the
NAIA’s top 25.
