Comment of the Month
We knew last July 2019 that the world was in
the midst of global change on multiple levels,
and we prayed for leadership that would be
prepared for the battle ahead. God answered
our prayer, but not just with Matt, Linda, and
Keith. He answered our prayer by inspiring and
bringing forth a new generation of spiritually
rooted leadership throughout the global church
that is taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.
The power in the seed of faith is released when
the seed is seared by fire, and the seed is now
beginning to take root.
— Hal Conklin, a member of the Free Methodist
Church – USA Board of Administration, on the
first anniversary of the election of Bishops Matt
Whitehead, Linda Adams, and Keith Cowart
Pris Thompson As a university student in Seattle during
the late ’60s I was invited to parties with fellow nurses
and interns. I studied, worked the hospital wards and
was a friend of several. As a PK and future missionary
I was perplexed in how I could “fit in.” I bravely took
my Pepsi, socialized and tried to be salt and light. God
called me to first be a missionary on campus ... not wait
for that overseas plane ticket.
A year or two later I was a midwifery student in rural
Kentucky. Again I socialized, befriended other students
and looked for ways to fit in. Little did I know that I was
being “watched.” A friend started off for Colorado to
take up skiing. The further she traveled from Kentucky,
the more a little voice told her to return and find what
“Pris had.”
Imagine my surprise when she landed in my room and
started asking questions. A few weeks later she gave
her heart to Friend Jesus and became a missionary
to the Aucas. Several years later I was assisting in a
delivery in Spokane and the nurse midwife was a former
student with me at the UW. We got reacquainted.
I did nothing profound ... just fit in as a part of my
friends’ world ... and walked where He led — in the
world but not of the world.
