Celebrity Dance Challenge
turns 10 years old By Severo Avila
When Kimberly King stepped into the role as
executive director of the Sexual Assault
Center of Northwest Georgia last year, it came with
many important responsibilities.
The center provides a variety of
extremely important services to
victims of sexual assault. But the
SAC is also known for a massive
event each year - the Rome Celebrity
Dance Challenge.
This is the tenth year for one of
Rome's most popular events and
while King couldn't divulge all the
information about it she did say she's
excited for what Rome residents will
see this year.
The tenth anniversary is a big deal
and King said she's excited not only
for the returning instructors but for their
lineup of 10 local celebs.
Traditionally, celebrities have included doctors,
teachers, politicians, members of the business
community and media personalities. King is
remaining tight-lipped about this year's lineup,
however. The full lineup will be announced in the
coming weeks when teams begin fundraising.
"It's going to be a great show," she said. "We have
some amazing instructors on board this year. And I
can't give out the names of our celebrity lineup yet
but I promise you won't want to miss these people
dancing."
This year's dance challenge will
take place Aug. 8 at the Rome City
Auditorium and tickets will be on sale by
early June.
But King and the SAC staff have
incredibly important work to do on a
day-to-day basis as well.
King was acting Executive Director
in June 2019 and was officially named
director in October. Since then, she and
the center's staff have been working to
provide the best possible services to
Floyd and surrounding counties.
"The team has been united and strong,"
Kimberly King
King said from office at the center. "Our hearts are
committed to serving and providing the services we
do and meeting the needs that we do."
She said while the dynamics of the organization
may have been interrupted last year, the services
never were and the transition in leadership has been
seamless.
