New teams, New night
Rome continues its relationship with the
Corky Kell Classic by welcoming
some fresh faces
By Jeremy Stewart
By the time August rolls around football fans are beginning to feel the
itch to see toe meet leather. Who is playing hardly matters to some,
but for the third year in a row, Rome will be one of the places to see
some marquee high school matchups right out of the gate.
But while Barron Stadium will once again
host games as part of this year’s Corky Kell
Classic, some new players will enter the
fray while Rome gets the spotlight on a new
night that will give the contests a little more
traditional feel.
This year’s Corky Kell Classic games at
Barron Stadium will be on Friday, Aug. 21,
making it the first time Rome’s games will be
played on a Friday since it became a host city
for the nearly 30-year-old kickoff series.
“We are super excited to be hosting the
Corky Kell Classic for the third year in a row.
This is a great way to kick off the Georgia
high school football season,” Rome Sports
Commission Director Ann Hortman said. “We
love our relationship with the Georgia High
School Association and having the teams
come here. And we are so excited to have it
under the Friday night lights.”
The evening gets started at 5:30 p.m. with
Cedartown taking on Carrollton, while the
nightcap will feature the hometown Rome
Wolves going up against the Rockmart
Yellow Jackets.
This will be the first time Cedartown and
Rockmart have been in the Corky Kell, while
Carrollton has not been a participant since
2014. Rome High is 1-1 in the Corky Kell
Classic, having split with Marietta over the last
two seasons.

teams that we have coming in — Rockmart,
