There is also evidence that access to trials can
increase real estate values. The expansion of trails
has also been considered to be a transportation
enhancement, particularly for the millennial
generation that has displayed a desire to land in
live, work and play communities where they don’t
necessarily need their own automobile.
McCord said trails are becoming more and more
of a transportation issue, not just a recreational
amenity.
“There’s transportation funding out there,
both from GDOT and the Federal Highway
Administration to support these projects,” McCord
said. “If it wasn’t before it sure is now.”
A housing summit, hosted by the Rome--Floyd
County Development Authority in late February
also made mention on more than one occasion
of the importance of housing that was within
walkable distance of jobs.
Outside of the town, Rome and Floyd County is
blessed with a lot of spectacular trails like those
at the Rocky Mountain Public Fishing Area in the
Big Texas Valley, the Pocket Recreation Area of the
Chattahoochee National Forest, the Department
of Natural Resources Lake Arrowhead compound
on Floyd Springs Road, the Lock and Dam Park and,
of course, most of the community parks managed
