"Kim is very team-oriented," said Tenia Shaw, victim
services coordinator at the center. "She has definitely
brought some unity."
"I wasn't expecting to be put in this role," King
said. "But we needed guidance and leadership and I
was so happy to take this on because I've dedicated
the last decade of my life to this work. Everything
happens for a reason."
The center provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, 24-
hour hospital accompaniment, on-site exams at SAC,
one-on-one crisis intervention, support groups and
counseling, criminal justice advocacy, information and
referral, court accompaniment and legal assistance.
All their services are free and confidential.
One thing that keeps the team grounded, King said,
is that all members of staff are still on-call, serving
as advocates for victims and respond to calls 24-7,
365 days a year for anyone who needs an immediate
response.
And while much of the work King and the staff do is
hidden from the public, there is one aspect of their job
that's very much a spectacle - the dance challenge.
The yearly fundraiser is one of Rome's most popular
social events and raises tens of thousands of dollars
each year for the center's services and awareness
programs.
And it's a hit with the community. Tickets sell out
quickly as Rome residents clamor to see some of
Rome's well known personalities in costume and
under the lights.
The center's staff is also looking forward to Sexual
Assault Awareness Month in April. Their popular
Broad Street walk will take place April 17 under the
theme "The Walk to End Victim Blaming."
