Although breastfeeding is natural, it doesn’t always just
happen. New moms often need encouragement and guidance
to successfully breastfeed. Moms and their new babies can
rely on the expertise and support of lactation consultants at
Floyd Medical Center.
Immediately after birth and throughout the hospital stay,
Floyd lactation consultants and Family Birth Center nurses
work with breastfeeding moms to help them with positioning
and latching, to teach them about baby’s feeding cues, and to
answer questions and offer encouragement.
The lactation consultants at Floyd are passionate about
helping moms breastfeed. Floyd lactation consultants are
registered nurses and International Board-Certified Lactation
Consultants (IBCLC).
“At Floyd, we are here to help all mothers reach their
breastfeeding goals, no matter what that might be,” said
Kellie Pearson, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services.
“We know that breastfeeding has many benefits for both
mom and baby, but there are many common challenges, and
consultations, which often include
weighing a baby before and after a feeding
• breast pump and breastfeeding bra fittings
• guidance with pumping
• treatment for sore nipples
• telephone support
• return to work tips
• help with weaning
Laura Harper, BSN, RN, IBCLC, a Floyd lactation
consultant, recommends that “moms and their partners
learn as much as they can before their new baby arrives,
either taking a breastfeeding class at Floyd or on their
own.”
“I would tell an expecting mom that ‘you can do it!’
and we are here to help at every stage,” Harper said. “I
learned a saying from Marie Biancuzzo at Breastfeeding
Outlook. She says offer your breast and skin to skin
‘early and often.’”
