the state. The program’s
benefit to students who
need additional support,
such as through mentoring
and tutoring, was missed,
which led Dr. Hightower to
include its locally funded
revival, as the High School
Success Coach program, in
this school year’s budget.
An important continuing
initiative to benefit all
students is CCSDcares,
which was launched in
2019 to address rising rates
among students of anxiety,
depression, self-harm,
suicidal ideations and
suicide.
The initiative has
included hiring of the
school district’s first two
mental health counselors;
training staff to help better
identity and refer to these
counselors any students
showing signs or risk of
depression, self-harm or
suicidal ideations; and
developing a system for
schools to identify students
most at risk of self-harm or
suicide. This system
provides at-risk students
with counseling support,
monitors their well-being,
and ensures they feel safe
and supported at school …
and that they and their
parents or guardians, have
access to community
resources for their needs
including mental health
counseling.
