2022-2023 | CLASS ACT 45
WINGing It
CCSD students are
soaring higher thanks to
their classmates’ support.
Etowah High School’s
Etowah East WING
(Where I Need to Go)
Tutoring Center opened in
2016 as a writing center.
Two years later, it evolved
to offer tutoring in all
courses, making it only the
fourth student-led tutoring
center of its kind in Georgia.
The WING student
tutors were so inspired by
their mission and success
that last school year they
expanded tutoring to
include SAT and ACT prep.
They also worked with
Cherokee High School
students to start a student
tutoring program on its
campus.
Using an online scheduling
system, students can
schedule free appointments,
which typically are
15 to 45 minutes, with a
WING tutor experienced in
the specified class or
college entrance exam.
Response from students
has been positive, and
demand for sessions has
grown each year, with
English and science help
the most requested.
In January, five WING
tutors also saw their
research article, “Building
Diverse Tutoring Centers
with Affinity Spaces,”
published in the Secondary
Schools Writing Center
Association’s Journal of
Peer Tutoring Secondary
Schools.
