Looking for books on the Shaker Schools’ suggested and required reading lists?
The Library has them all, including dozens of copies of required reading titles for Shaker
Heights High School’s English and Social Studies classes. Whether kids want to read or
listen to books, librarians are ready to help find audio, print, or eBook options.
The Library’s free Reading & Math Summer Review program for students entering
grades 1-8 can help students retain the academic gains made during the school year. The
program continues through July, and appointments for 25-minute, one-on-one sessions with
a certified teacher are filled as space allows. Call or visit the Library to schedule a session.
Studying in the summer can be fun and fruitful for teens. Shakerlibrary.org has several
digital resources and databases especially for high school students. Driving-Tests gives
access to practice DMV tests for future drivers. Method Test Prep offers comprehensive
self-paced online ACT and SAT prep programs. Take advantage of the test prep over the
summer to reduce stress levels when taking the real test.
And off she goes to
change the world
Congratulations to the Class of 2019!

The best back-to-school item is free – a
library card. It doesn’t need to be charged
or have its batteries replaced. It’s pocketsized
and provides help for all school
subjects. Children and teens accompanied
by a parent or guardian with ID can get a
traditional library card, or those without a
parent/guardian can register for a Three
for Me card (ages 12 and younger) or a
Three for Teens card (ages 13-17) to check
out three books at a time and gain access to
the internet.
Enjoy the last blast of summer and
remember to include the Library in your
summer and back-to-school plans.
Plant a Seed: Read All about
the Library’s Seed Library
Shaker gardeners have a new resource for
growing a wider range of food and flowers.
It’s the new Seed Library, which can be
found in a quaint, old library card catalog
at Main Library. The drawers are filled with
24 varieties of organic vegetables, herbs,
and flowers that grow well in our region.
Gardeners are welcome to take up to five
seed packets a month. Additionally, there
are take-home growing tip sheets from
gardening experts and a list of programs for
local gardeners.
“The idea for a Seed Library came from
residents at a Moreland Neighbor Night,”
says Community Engagement Librarian
Gabriel Venditti. “The Library has been
working on the project with the Cleveland
Seed Bank. We were excited to launch the
service last April on Plant A Seed Day.”
