Timeka L. Rashid
Appointed to Library Board
The Shaker Heights Board of Education
has appointed Timeka L. Rashid to a
seven-year term on the Library Board of
Trustees, which began in April.
Rashid received her bachelor’s degree
from The College of Wooster with a double
major in History and Black Studies. She
earned a master’s in Higher Education
Administration from The Ohio State
University and her doctorate in Higher
Education Administration/Student Affairs
from Ohio University. She is currently the
associate dean of students at Kent State
University.
A Cleveland native, Rashid is a
graduate of the Cleveland public schools.
She has always been drawn to education
and civic pursuits. Many of her affiliations
– including membership in Delta Sigma
Theta, a sorority of college-educated
women dedicated to public service with
an emphasis on programs that target the
African-American community, the NAACP,
and the National Council of Negro Women
– illustrate her dedication to education,
activism, and civic engagement.
“I am dedicated to my hometown of
Shaker and I’m excited to join the board
to support the programs that enhance our
community,” she says. “I believe that the
Library is the core of the community and
brings people together from all walks of
life. I am eager to be an active participant
in helping to develop and support
programs that foster community growth,
education, and collaboration.”

The Best “Sort” of Friends
“Good books, like good friends, are few and chosen; the more select,
the more enjoyable.”
— Louisa May Alcott
If you have enjoyed browsing the Friends’ Book Sales, you
can thank a small group of dedicated volunteers who work
throughout the year preparing for the spring and fall book sales.
These good Friends of the Library carefully and thoughtfully
choose and sort books for others to enjoy.
The volunteers meet almost every Wednesday morning
at the Main Library to cull donations. First, they gather
paperbacks without covers and books with broken spines or
missing pages for recycling. Next, they sort by subject matter.
Then the weekly workload is neatly shelved so librarians can
browse and select items they want to add to the collection.
This process saves the Library money and sometimes yields a
sought-after, out-of-print book.
