Innovation Fund
Moves Full
STEAM Ahead
The Shaker Schools
Foundation and Shaker
Heights Schools have allocated
nearly $437,000 to support
the District’s i3 Initiative at all
eight school buildings.
The i3 Initiative, which
promotes student Inquiry,
Innovation and Imagination,
is led by a committee of teachers,
administrators,
community stakeholders and
business partners.
• The High School has created a new course in robotics and advanced
manufacturing, which will be offered in the 2019-20 school year. The funding will also
allow for new technology for the engineering and arts classes, including CAD software
and a 3D printer to enhance the jewelry, illustration and digital design classes.
• Woodbury will use its grant funding to create an “ecosystem of innovation” in
the school library, which will include a makerspace with LEGOs, ozobots and more.
•The grants will also fund professional learning opportunities to support STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) classroom learning at Shaker
Heights Middle School and all five K-4 buildings.
The Shaker Schools Foundation launched the Innovation Fund in 2018 to bolster
the International Baccalaureate curriculum and STEAM learning at all grade levels
within Shaker Heights Schools.
“These initiatives have already had an impact by enhancing the technology
available to our students,” says Holly Coughlin, Executive Director of the Foundation.
“We will continue to partner with the District and i3 stakeholders to provide robust
opportunities to further innovation in the Shaker Schools.”
