KSU will enter a new era for its football program starting with the
2022 season. Aer playing the rst seven seasons in the Big South, the
Owls will move to the ASUN and join new conference foes Central
Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, along with North Alabama.
With the move, all of the athletic programs from Kennesaw State
will now be playing under the ASUN umbrella.
In addition to football, KSU is in the midst of the 2021-22 men’s
and women’s basketball seasons. e men’s program is showing
great growth under third-year coach, and former Wheeler High
School standout, Amir Abdur-Rahim. e women’s program is
getting to know new coach Octavia Blue and will likely hit new
heights soon, as well.
In all, Kennesaw State oers 16 varsity sports — seven for the men,
nine for the women.
Life University oers 20 varsity sports including its signature rugby
programs. RugbyATL also played last season at Life, and advanced
to the Major League Rugby championship game. Based in Marietta,
RugbyATL will not be able to play its home games at Life this season
aer storm damage to the sports complex. At least for one season, it
will play its home games at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta.
e 2018 MLS Cup champion Atlanta United has its training facility
on Franklin Gateway in Marietta. e 33-acre site, which features a
30,000-square-foot headquarters, six full-size elds including a 2,500-
seat stadium for tournaments. It also houses Atlanta United’s youth
programs from U-12 through U-19.
Atlanta United plays its MLS games in downtown Atlanta at Mercedes
Benz Stadium.
With all the college and professional leagues in and around the
Cobb County area, they naturally have to get their talent from
somewhere. For many of the programs, they have to look no
further than the 22 Georgia High School Association programs
within the county lines.
In the last calendar year Cobb County high schools won 14
state championships including having all-Cobb state nal matchups
for the Class AAAAAA boys basketball title and the Class
AAAAAAA girls ag football championship, won by Wheeler and
Hillgrove respectively.
ose high schools have sent players like Chicago Bears quarterback
Justin Fields (Harrison High School), Las Vegas Raiders
tight end Darren Waller (North Cobb), running back Kenyon
Drake (Hillgrove), Denver Broncos linebacker Bradley Chubb
(Hillgrove) and New York Giants linebacker Azeez Ojulari (Marietta)
among others to the NFL.
In the NBA, Collin Sexton (Pebblebrook) and Isaac Okoro
(McEachern) are a big part of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Jaylen
Brown (Wheeler) is an all-star talent with the Boston Celtics.
Joining Swanson in the Major Leagues includes Tyler Stephenson
(Kennesaw Mountain) a catcher with the Cincinnati Reds, Seattle
outelder Taylor Trammell (Mount Paran Christian), Texas Rangers
rst baseman Nathanial Lowe and others. Now, the only question remains
is how long with the MLB lockout continues before the Braves
can hang the World Series championship banner at Truist Park?
