Celebrating our 90th Year In Cobb County!
continued on page 20
e 2021 and early 2022 sports calendars have been a nice diversion
for the fans of the state of Georgia and in some ways have helped turn
Cobb County into the county of champions.
Look no further than the 2021 version of the Atlanta Braves. Under
.500 until August, the Braves caught re. ey went on to win the National
League Eastern Division behind a remade outeld and a dominant
bullpen and then knocked o the Milwaukee Brewers and Los
Angeles Dodgers to win the pennant.
Exactly seven months aer Major League Baseball took the All-Star
game out of Truist Park, the ballpark and e Battery Atlanta shook
as Marietta’s own Dansby Swanson grabbed a grounder and threw to
Freddie Freeman for the nal out in Game 6 of the World Series to beat
the Houston Astros.
It was Atlanta’s rst World Series since 1995, and despite opening the
season with a limited amount of fans, the Braves drew more than 2.3
million fans to Truist Park, which was second in the National League to
only the Dodgers.
While the Braves were celebrating a title, the Georgia Bulldogs were
putting 41 years of near misses and heartache to bed. A perfect regular
season, a spot in the College Football Playo and a 33-18 victory over
the Alabama Crimson Tide in the national championship game has
Cobb County and the whole state of Georgia wondering what they can
expect next.
Georgia wasn’t the only college program to make a mark during the
2021 season. Kennesaw State University won its third Big South Conference
championship in ve years. e Owls nished the season with an
11-2 record and advanced to the second round of the Football Championship
Subdivision playos.
