At the beginning of the 2019-20 school year, Cobb
schools had 112,097 students, about 4.5% more than the
district does now.
To start the 2019-20 school year, Marietta City Schools
counted 8,877 students, about 2% higher than current levels.
Marietta High School and the Cobb County School District
recently announced in October 2021 that their four-year
graduation rates were 86.7% and 87.2% respectively, several
points above the statewide average. Cobb schools saw a dip
of about 0.5% from the previous year. In Marietta, the rate
improved by about 3% over a year.
Georgia’s 2021 average graduation rate of 83.7%, held about
steady from the previous year, dropping by one-tenth of a
percentage point.
Looking forward, both districts will be focused on
making up for the learning loss that students experienced
when school was being taught virtually. Both districts have
also given incentives, such as raises and bonuses, to try and
retain teachers, bus drivers and other personnel amid a
tight labor market.
e Marietta school district is rolling out a new dual
language immersion program at Park Street Elementary,
mirroring an existing program at Dunleith Elementary.
Cobb schools in 2021 went through an accreditation
review conducted by accreditor Cognia. e district kept
its accreditation, but Cognia said the district has problems,
including board members not following the ethics code, a lack
of a consistent and formal process for purchasing decisions,
a lack of measurable goals in the district’s strategic plan, and
inghting on the school board that has cast the district in a
negative light. CCSD was given a year to make progress on
these issues.
