Wellstar predicts construction will nish in August 2026,
according to documents it led with the Georgia Department
of Community Health.
Wellstar tells the state it plans to demolish the Baird Building,
a two-story building built in 1964, that is “outdated and
beyond its useful life.” e building sits between the existing
purple and blue towers. e new tower would connect to both
towers and enhance convenience and accessibility, according to
the application.
Several hospital amenities would be relocated to the tower,
including the cafeteria, kitchen, chapel, gi shop and registration/
admissions.
One oor of the tower would have a 32-room critical care
unit. Another oor would house an expanded neonatal intermediate
and intensive care unit. e hospital’s current NICU is
“highly utilized and been operating above capacity for several
years,” according to documents led with the state.
e top three oors would have 32 private rooms each serving
medical, neurological, surgical and cardiac acute inpatients.
In seeking state permission to build the tower, Wellstar cited
the growing popularity of private rooms, which oer more
privacy, less stress on patients, lower infection rates and fewer
medical errors.
Increasing the size of the hospital, Wellstar says, is needed to
accommodate the expected growth of Kennestone’s service area.
Wellstar’s primary service area of Cobb, Cherokee and Paulding
counties is expected to grow by more than 5% over the next ve
years. And in the six counties making up Kennestone’s primary
and secondary service areas, the 65+ population is expected to
grow by more than 25% in the next ve years.
Wellstar isn’t the only health system with big plans. Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta, the largest and only freestanding
pediatric healthcare system in Georgia, has started what it
calls the largest healthcare project ever in the history of the
state: the $1.5 billion Arthur M. Blank Hospital, which was
named for the founder of Cobb-based Home Depot aer his
foundation made a $200 million donation.
Located at the northeastern corner of North Druid Hills
and I-85 in Brookhaven, the 1.5 million-square-foot pediatric
hospital is expected to open in 2025 and will include
a 19-story tower with two wings and additional operating
rooms, specialty beds and diagnostic equipment to meet
anticipated patient needs, according to CHOA. e hospital
will also feature space for clinical research, clinical trials and
overall patient care.
Meanwhile, the coronavirus continues to rage, as a new
variant, even more transmissible than delta, sends cases to
record heights. Deaths have yet to follow, however; the omicron
variant is less deadly than those that came before it, and,
coupled with vaccines and new therapies, 2022 begins with
people hoping, again, that the chaos would soon be over.
