As Reyes walks from the two-story
brick building to the end of the
property to House No. 12, his voice
reverberates the passion for his project.
Sharing his own personal education
of the mill village workings and
stories, he walks onto the front porch
of House No. 12, his first restored
village house.
He points to a metal vulture sculpture
greeting visitors on the front
porch. “A black vulture family lived
upstairs in the attic space.” Then, he
raises a small hammer that has been
transformed into a door knocker.
“People said that moonshiners would
make shine in the woods, and if the
smoke got too high, someone from the
village would take a hammer and bang
it on the side of the house. That would
let them know the smoke was too
high.” Inside, he shares his creation,
