The Hatfields installed nine-inch
wide oil-finished wood floors with
a rich matte sheen. They brought
in fresh trim details and new textures
with a brick accent wall in the
stairwell, painted white, which carries
through to the terrace level living
space below.
They enlisted the help of interior
designer Ashley Martin, who they
say helped push them out of their
comfort zone with some of the
fixtures and finishes. “She definitely
encouraged us to do things we had
not done before that we think turned
out fantastic,” says Bob.
Building on her philosophy of
beginning with a neutral, transitional
palette, Martin was able to use accent
pieces and a mix of colors and textures
to bring together an “updated,
yet classic feel.”
“We always try to use pieces that are
going to be timeless, but throw in an
accent or a pillow fabric that is more
trendy, but is easy to swap out down the
road,” says Martin.
Using a neutral foundation, Martin
was able to mix gold and glass with
black and bronze, light cabinetry with

dark, and leather with fine fabrics, to
create a cohesive look.
“Blacks can be really harsh alone, and
gold can be too ‘glam,’ but when you
mix them together, you get this perfect
balance for a comfortable, relaxed look,”
says Martin.
The Hatfields say Martin also brought
them out of their comfort zone with the
scope and size of some things, including
large built-ins that serve as a strong
focal point in the living room, and the
plaster vent hood in the kitchen, which
they both say is a “showstopper.”
“I think because it was our house, we
weren’t afraid to test the boundaries
a little bit and do some fun stuff,” says
Charity. “I think it turned out amazing.”
