Shaker Alumni Hall of Fame Names Eight New Members
Last fall, the Shaker Schools Alumni Hall of Fame inducted eight new members.
Instituted in 1986, the Hall of Fame has inducted more than 280 distinguished alumni
out of more than 36,000 Shaker Heights High School graduates.
The inductees include (top row) Jamil Smith (‘93) Senior Writer at Rolling Stone;
Aaron David Miller (‘67), Vice President for the New Initiatives and a Distinguished
Fellow and Director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International
Center for Scholars; Michael Green (‘80) CEO and founder of the Center for
Environmental Health; Abdul Williams (‘90), a screenwriter and winner of the 2018
NAACP Image Award for outstanding writing; (bottom row) Judy Harris (‘66), Senior
Counsel in the Washington DC law firm Reed Miller; Kathy Roth-Douquet (‘82) founder
and CEO of Blue Star Families; David A. Hansell (‘71), Commissioner of the New York
City Administration for Children’s Services; and Abby Goulder Abelson, M.D. (‘70) Chair
of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases at Cleveland Clinic.
Nominations are received from alumni and from the community at large. In order
to be considered for the Hall of Fame, candidates must be graduates of the Shaker school
system and have shown exemplary achievement in all walks of life including business,
medicine, law, education, the fine and performing arts, government, and public service,
among others.
More than 100 guests joined the inductees at Shaker Heights Country Club for the
Hall of Fame dinner.
“This was an amazing group of inductees. They all made a point to share their
stories of how special and integral the Shaker Schools were to their accomplishments,”
says Holly Coughlin, executive director of the Shaker Schools Foundation. “They were
also gracious with their time, meeting with groups of our High School students who
were interested in pursuing similar careers. It’s so important for our young people to be
inspired by people who have been where they are now.”
