Maxey arranged for meeting room space
and publicity for the program. More
than 70 teens and adults attended and
joined in a discussion afterward. Imagine
also worked with the Library to create
a display in the Main Reading Room to
reinforce the message.
After Shaker Middle School teacher
David Saluga started a History Day
after-school club, he reached out to the
Library for support for his students’
National History Day (NHD) projects.
The Library responded by organizing a
Library Research Day for middle school
students. Now an annual event, students
spend the day at the Library, working
with librarians to research and refine
their History Day projects and receive
one-on-one feedback from NHD staff.
Shaker residents Susan and Tim Gall,
who developed FactCite.com, support
the program by providing students free
access to their database and underwriting
a cash prize to the winning team.
Commenting on the program Susan
Gall says, “We are happy to make this
gift to the Library, helping to provide
opportunities that not only benefit, but
also reward student research.”
As a community engagement builder, look no farther than the Library’s Local
History Collection. The Local History archives preserve historic artifacts, and oral and
digital history projects relevant to the community.
For residents who want to know more about their houses, the Local History
Collection has thousands of blueprints of Shaker homes on microfilm. Until recently
patrons had to pay a fee to obtain digital images of these blueprints; however, through
a partnership with the Cleveland Public Library’s Digital Public Library, the Library has
long-term use of a digital microfilm scanner, and patrons can create free digital copies
of their microfilmed blueprints. Local History Librarian Meghan Hays says, “Response
has been robust. Dozens of residents have made appointments to scan copies of their
blueprints from the Library.”
ESL classes led by Carolyn Steiner and a cadre of volunteers help non-English
speakers integrate into the community. The Library provides a place where new
immigrants and their families can connect with resources, learn new skills, and meet new
people. In addition, the Library participates in international family nights at the schools,
providing information and resources that may be helpful in navigating language and
cultural differences.
The Library puts people first, providing programs, readings, lectures,
demonstrations, exhibitions, homework help, and training to inform, inspire, and engage
the community.
Featured Databases: Reliable Information at Your Fingertips
The Library has expanded its database offerings, which are available free with a Shaker
Library card. Before you Google your query, visit one of the Library’s helpful databases.
What’s the difference between the web and a database? Library databases gather
information from professionals or experts in their fields and the information provided
is fact checked and searchable. While the web can present a variety of both correct and
incorrect information, the Library’s databases offer reliable information that is easy to
