Architectural
Survey of
Moreland
Homes
is Now
Complete
The Moreland History Project began in 2016 and
developed into a collaboration among residents,
the City, the Shaker Heights Public Library,
the Shaker Historical Society and Museum,
the Cleveland Restoration Society (CRS), and
Cleveland State University. The goal was to
document the history of the neighborhood
through interviews, oral histories, and an
architectural survey to be conducted, in part,
by residents.
Guided by a comprehensive manual
developed by the CRS, residents and other
volunteers began to document the wide
range of housing styles in the Moreland
neighborhood south of Chagrin Boulevard.
Each house was catalogued based on type,
including American Foursquare, Bungalow,
Cleveland Double, and Cape Cod Revival.
The information was then recorded in
electronic form, which also required details
about materials used, window types, chimney
details, and porch configurations. The survey
revealed that Bungalows are the most common
building type (25 percent) and Arts & Crafts/
Craftsman (55 percent) is the most common
building style.
After many months of meticulous work, the
architectural survey is now complete. It provides
in-depth and comprehensive information about
each structure in Moreland. Those who wish
