Now that 2018 has come and gone, the best
direction to look is forward. Experiencing the
trends in fashion throughout the year of 2018 was
like riding a rusty bike down a gravel hill towards
a concrete wall: although the ride might have been
terrifyingly thrilling, the exuberant adventure was
headed towards an inevitable end. These trends that
seemingly crashed into the U.S. coasts and gradually
spread throughout the country include dad-shoes
Gracie Young
(bulky tennis shoes that strangely ooze 90s nostalgia), see-through plastic
clothing (shoes, jackets, purses, etc.), and fanny packs.
Most of us are breaking into 2019 with high hopes of rocking the
best trends of the year. Luckily, the following list may help our midwestern
towns catch wind of the trends that will engulf each coast. The first trend that
we will see popping up in the summer of 2019 made its last appearance in the
90s. Biking/cycling shorts will be taking over the coming summer in muted
greens, blues, and coral (the color of the year). The sporty trend first made its
comeback towards the end of 2018 when celebrities like the Kardashians and
the Hadid sisters were spotted rocking the spandex shorts in public, but the
trend is sure to sweep the country again as soon as the weather allows.
A trend that can be worn sooner, due to our current teethchattering
weather, is the oversized puffer coat. The oversized puffer coat was
also spotted towards the end of 2018, but it’s not yet ready to leave us hanging.
This warm and practical trend not only combats the freezing weather with
an iron fist but also draws attention through its striking silhouette. Anyone
searching to expand their horizon in a practical manner should look towards
the oversized puffer coat with hopeful eyes.
The next trend that is bound to explode across the country is tiedyed
clothing. This blast from the past took over the 2019 spring/summer
runways through the world’s biggest fashion designers, including Ralph
Lauren. This reinvented design was seen on almost every type of clothing
imaginable, including blazers. Speaking of blazers, another blossoming trend
for 2019 is the boxy, padded, blazer jacket in all of its 80s and 90s glory.
Yes, shoulder pads are back and better than ever. Could this resurgence
subconsciously be due to the iconic boxy costumes featured in the latest
Kanye West and Lil Pump music video? Probably not, but it’s always fun
the pin down when a trend first started to appear. Those who are wary about
committing to any of the trends listed in this article may find more comfort
in following 2019’s predicted color trends.
The Pantone color of the year, as stated before, is coral; however,
history has shown that the color of the year is also paired with its opposite,
otherwise known as a complementary color. For example, last year the color
of the year was violet. Also one of the most popular colors of 2018 was yellow,
which is the complement of violet. Therefore, the color coral will most likely
be accompanied by its complement: variations of blue and green. No matter
what trends in which you participate in 2019, stay confident and own who
you are. I wish you the best of luck in this new year.
