With the floors clear, sweep up salt and other debris. Finish cleaning the
floors with a quick mopping.
Clean the dryer vent and check for blockages outside
Dryers are one of the most common causes of household fires, due to lint
build up. Clearing the dryer of lint also helps it run more efficiently. Every
time you finish running a load of laundry, clean the lint trap. Every couple
of months, clean out the exhaust duct as well. During the winter months,
snow may block the exterior dryer vent. Inspect the vent from the outside
and clear it of snow and debris as needed.
Check for ice dams and icicles
Ice dams and icicles may lead to roof damage and cause leaks, which is
expensive. Falling icicles also present a safety hazard to family members,
pets, neighbors, and deliverymen. The best way to prevent icicles from
forming is to keep the gutters clear of leaves and debris. The more water
that flows through the downspouts, the less water remains to pool and
form icicles. Following a snowfall, use a roof rake to clear the roof of snow
and ice to prevent further icicle formation. When you knock down icicles,
wear a hardhat and safety glasses and ensure the area is free of people and
pets before proceeding.
When there are air leaks in the home or the attic isn't properly insulated,
ice dams occur. If you suspect one of these issues, hire a professional to
address it before ice dams and icicles form.
Clean out and organize your closets
Following the holiday season and post-holiday sales, most likely you've
accumulated a number of new items over the past few months. Winter is
an ideal time to sort through the closets in the bedrooms, entryway, and
basement as well as the linen closets and pantry. Go through each storage
area to make room for your new belongings. Throw out worn and broken
items and donate items you no longer need or want. Organize your remaining
belongings.
Inspect your bathrooms for mold and mildew growth
When the house is closed up tight during the winter, it's difficult to keep
the bathrooms well ventilated. Closed up bathrooms often result in mold
and mildew growth. As you deep clean the bathroom each week, pay attention
to grout, the ceiling, and any nooks and crannies in the shower,
which are susceptible to moisture buildup. Bleach, Borax, vinegar, ammonia,
and hydrogen peroxide are ideal products to remove mold and
mildew from smooth, nonporous surfaces.
Sanitize all handheld devices, toys, doorknobs, faucets,
and light switches
Keeping your home sanitized is especially important in winter when colds
and flu viruses run rampant. Sanitizing frequently touched items greatly
