It’s Raining Cats and Dogs
at the Library’s
Pet-A-Palooza Week
The week of May 12 is Pet Week when the
Library will paws to celebrate the many
benefits of pet ownership. Families can take
home a booklist of favorite shaggy dog stories
to share, and preschoolers can color their
own gingham dog or calico cat. School-aged
children can create a pet-related craft at
4:15 pm Monday, May 13, and they can sign
up to Read to a Dog at 4 pm Thursday, May
16 at Main Library.
Adults can join in a discussion about pet
owners’ responsibilities when a panel of experts
from the City, including the Shaker Heights
Police Department, and volunteers for feral cats
present an informative panel at 7 pm Thursday,
May 16 at Main Library. Learn how to find or
help a lost pet. Find out about the feeding,
neutering, and wellness of unhoused cats,
and the effect loose cats and dogs can have on
neighborhoods.
James Freedman, Shaker author and
longtime volunteer with the Cleveland Animal
Protective League, will discuss his book,

shelter adoption featuring photographs of

26 SPRING 2019 | WWW.SHAKER.LIFE
This year, Shaker Library and
the City’s Tree Advisory Board’s
annual Arbor Day Poster and
PoeTREE Contest celebrates
the late Ohio poet Mary
Oliver. The contest is framed
around her poem, “When I
am Among the Trees.” Young
artists and poets are asked to
illustrate thoughts from that
poem. Poems may be typed or
handwritten clearly on lettersized
paper. Posters should
be completed on 11x17-inch
poster paper or card stock.
Entry forms are available
at both libraries and Gali’s Florist and Garden Center. Poster paper will be available
in the Children’s Room at both libraries and in the Main Library Teen Center through
April 12 for those who wish to create in the Library. Prizes include award certificates
and native species trees donated by Gali’s.
All entries are due by 5 pm Friday, April 12. Winners will be acknowledged at an
awards ceremony at 4:15 pm Friday, April 26, at Main Library.
