The power of a Geographic Information System (GIS)
has been harnessed to help bring the results of the Moreland
Architectural Survey to life. Residents are invited to visit
bit.ly/morelandarchitecture to begin an interactive architectural
history tour of the Southern Moreland neighborhood.
Thanks to the hard work by neighborhood volunteers and
a collaboration between the City’s Neighborhood Revitalization
Department and the Cuyahoga County GIS Department,
information from approximately 500 properties has been
catalogued and organized into an interactive, easy-to-use
webpage. A map of the neighborhood allows users to locate and
click on individual parcels to learn about the architectural history
and details of the home. Links to the County Auditor’s website
and the historic building card containing the year the home was
built and the name of the architect are included in the parcel
information. Data can also be filtered along various parameters
such as architectural style, window type, or roof type. SL
Welcome
to Moreland
The installation of Strength in Unity, a permanent
public art piece by Shaker resident Scott Goss, one of
the winners of the 2018 Moreland Call for Artists, was
installed in December. It marks one of the entrances to
the Moreland neighborhood and boldly says, “Welcome.”
The installation is made up of 29 colorful welded
steel doors modeled after front doors found on homes in
the neighborhood. They are artfully arranged in the shape
of an “M” providing a visual cue that this is the gateway
to a special place. Goss envisions people interacting with
the doors to find the ones that are styled most like their
own. The doors “are stacked to represent the power a
community has when it embraces collaboration.”
Situated near the corner of Hildana Road and
Chagrin Boulevard in Hildana Park, the artwork, along
with the planned installation of game tables and a Little
Free Library, will create an active and attractive green
space in the neighborhood. Feel free to interact
with the art. Snap a selfie and send it to
kamla.lewis@shakeronline.com. You just
might see it on the City’s social
media channels!
