The Library Is Your Primary Source
When you find yourself in a research conundrum, the Library’s staff of information scientists
(aka librarians) have special training to help you navigate the complex world of data. Among
the many roles librarians perform, some of the most important are helping to evaluate sources,
locate the latest research, and dissect a complex topic.
For many students, working on an iSearch project is their first opportunity to dive into the
world of research. Google may not be up to the task, but library staff can use the catalog
and databases to help. World Book Kids, Science Online, and Points of View Reference
Center are some of the online resources provided on the Library website. Students creating
an Ohio History Day presentation can find pertinent data through the Biography Reference
Central and the Ohio History Central databases, and can find historical news reporting
through the Akron Beacon Journal and The Plain Dealer.
Premium databases provide a collection customized to the preferences of patrons.
The Library’s participation in CLEVNET, a growing consortium that connects Shaker
Heights to more than 40 other library systems in Northeast Ohio, puts the world at a
student’s fingertips.
To help you use these resources effectively, you can also book a librarian for 50 minutes
of his or her undivided attention. Whether you’re a budding genealogist or a student with
a school project, a teacher, a homeschooler, or just a curious reader, a librarian is available
to help you find the information you need and can teach you how to make use of all the
features of the Library’s catalog or any of its databases, including downloading books,
magazines, and videos to your device or laptop, or get you started on your family tree.
Book a librarian via the website shakerlibrary.org, or call either library’s Reference Desk.
Serving Up Technology…Your Way
The Library matches free technology training to your learning style and comfort level. If
you like small classes, the Library’s small group classes are available for all skill levels,
from Computers for Beginners, Welcome to the Internet, and commonly used
programs like Word and Excel. Specialized interests like Photoshop and Social
Media are popular classes, too.
Class schedules are posted at shakerlibrary.org and take-home brochures
are available at the Information Desk and in the Computer Center.
Need some one-on-one time with a professional who can help you
make the most of your email or enable your device to download free eBooks,
audiobooks, movies, and music? The Library’s experienced Technology Trainer is
available for free individual training sessions by appointment. To schedule yours,
call 216-991-2030 ext. 2385.
For the do-it-yourselfer, free online tutorials let you set your own pace while
helping you learn to maximize your skills using PowerPoint, LinkedIn, or Pinterest.
When you think of learning at the Library, perhaps story time, test prep,
or arts and crafts classes come to mind, but think again! The Library offers a wealth of
knowledge for adults as well and reminds us that we never truly stop learning.
