Bubble and splatter painting,
recycled art, mask-making, and comic
book-making programs for children are
just a few of the exciting programs that
help reinforce this summer’s reading
theme, Art Builds Community. Parents
and kids can sign up online to join a
drum circle, dissect a computer, make a
personal puppet theater, and more. Visit
shakerlibrary.org to see all the programs
available for you and your family.
Community art plays an important
role in the life of the Library. This summer
in collaboration with Women’s Work, a
local arts collective, the Library will curate
a rotating collection of its members’ art
including jewelry, pottery, and fabric work
at Main Library. In addition, the African-
American Quilt and Doll Guild will display
colorful story quilts through July 31 on
the Main Library Art Wall. In August,
the Shaker Historical Society will display
The Van Sweringens’ Ads and Their Artists
and Shaker Historical Society Executive
Director Ware Petznick will offer a gallery
talk at 7 pm Tuesday, August 21.
Mercer resident Jennifer Souers
Chevraux of Illumine Creative Solutions
will present The Art of Preserving Your
Treasures at 7 pm Wednesday, July 25 at
Woods Branch. Jennifer will share her
expertise – gained over more than 20 years
of service to museums, historical societies,
libraries, galleries, and artists – to teach
how to collect, catalog, and preserve your
documents, artifacts, and artwork to
ensure their lasting legacy.
Enjoy, explore, and engage in
community this summer at the Library.
