Tell us a success story about a student you
helped. While there are many students I can think
of as a success story, a particular student that I
would like to highlight will be referred to as Evelyne.
Evelyne had just moved here and spoke very limited
English. Evelyne wasshy, nervous and hesitant to new
experiences. With a language barrier, it was challenging
but not impossible, so Evelyne and I created a
composition notebook that we used to share notes.
Every day, I would write a note to Evelyne asking
about her day, new students she may feel comfortable
speaking to, and lessons she had learned. Evelyne
would write a note back and share with me the book
the next morning. Soon, I noticed Evelyne starting to
participate in class discussions, introduce herself to
her peers she had mentioned in her notebook, and
for the first time… sit with her peers during lunch and
begin conversations. It was at that moment that I
knew her life here was truly beginning and this space
could be her new home. She soon became an active
participate in her classes, her peers began to save her
a seat at lunch, and her joyous personality was shining
so bright.
