teachers?Three things: 1) Mastering any subject is messy and non-linear.The
world is full of complex and fascinating concepts that can’t be immediately unraveled,
and to me that’s part of the fun of it! Students – treat yourselves with
grace and patience as you grapple with new ideas. No one – no matter what
they might say – “gets” everything immediately all the time.Parents – recognize
that moments of understanding and connection happen at dierent times
and in dierent ways for dierent kids, and that’s okay. Community members
– provide the freedom, space in the curriculum and resources to teachers
that they need to allow this type of learning to unfold for their students. 2)
Assume good intent. As a scientist, I know that experiments can go wrong, I
can get results I didn’t expect, or I might not have all the answers yet. That
doesn’t mean I’ve failed – it just means that I have more to learn! Teaching and
learning likewise are organic experiences. When an assignment doesn’t go the
way you expect or you’re frustrated about your progress, assume that your
teacher cares about you and is in your corner.Reach out and have a reflective
conversation about learning strategies with your teacher. 3)Find the
joy in discovery! Our world is an amazing place full of surprises, beauty
and fascinating patterns.Remember that it’s not about the grade, it’s
about the journey.
