BEST TE ACHERS
Tell us a success story about a student you helped. One student that stands
out to me right now, is sweet little girl I taught in first grade. She graduated
high school last year and is now wrapping up her first semester at GSU. She
had struggled to learn to read and it really bothered her; which really hurt
her mama’s heart. This of course hurt herteacher’sheart, too. I continued to
encourage her and her mom to stick with my plan and to know that one day this
beautiful, intelligent girl will read in her own time. Sure enough, we continued
the work and one day the letters and words began to make sense and she
became a confident and proud reader.

Tell us a success story about a student you helped. I recently ran into
a student that I had taught four years ago and she gave me a wonderful
hug and said, “You changed my life.I wasn›t a good reader, I hated school
and I was angry and didn›t have any friends. Because of you, I don’t throw
fits anymore and I am a great reader. I love school and it was because you
believed in me, helped me every day and taught me how to learn, make
friends and control my temper. You were my mama, teacher, friend and
counselor. You will always be my favorite teacher.” It’s a lucky day when
you get to hear a story like this! It was also terrific when a student I had
taught in another state, 14 years earlier, wrote me a letter and said, “I
became a teacher because of you. I wanted to make a dierence in the
world, too.”A moment you don’t forget.

What can we as students, parents and the community do to support our
teachers? I believe the community can support educators by trusting them.
I believe educators want the best for all students. We want students to be
successful and with trust and support from the community we can continue
to help students grow, but most importantly master the standards.
