University of California, Berkeley.
He is the author of Going Solo,
Heat Wave, Fighting for Air, Climate
Change and the Future of Cities, and
Modern Romance: An Investigation.
In Palaces for the People, Klinenberg
posits that social infrastructure –
physical spaces and organizations
– shape the way people interact, and
he recommends a greater investment
in more of these public spaces that
bring people together. His book was named one of the
best books of the year by NPR and was longlisted for the
Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in nonfiction.
Klinenberg will speak at the Ohio Theater the evening
of March 9. The Library will host a book discussion at
2 pm Saturday, March 14 at Woods Branch. Libraries throughout
Northeast Ohio will offer an assortment of programs based on the book. For a complete
schedule of events, visit the website at onecommunityreads.org.
Welcome New Staff
at Shaker Library
Allison Holley is the Library’s new Teen
Librarian. A native of Racine, Wisconsin,
she can be found in the Teen Center or in
the Children’s
Rooms at both
libraries. While
studying for
her degree in
Spanish and
English, Allison
worked at the
Seeley G. Mudd
Library at Lawrence
University
in Appleton,
Wisconsin. She
earned her Master in Library Information
Science from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.
Jeopardy fans might recognize
Allison from her appearance on the
2017 Jeopardy College Tournament. She
was one of only 15 students selected
nationally to compete. She has watched
or played Jeopardy with her family since
she was nine years old. In college, she was
a member of her University’s Quizbowl
team, which won the on-campus trivia
contest. She knows how to find answers to
your questions!
Allison says that the best part
of her job is finding and adding new
items to the collection. Her reading
tastes are varied and she especially
enjoys young adult books, science
fiction, and fantasy. Her favorite book
is Wendy Mass’ coming-of-age novel, A
Mango-Shaped Space about a girl with
synesthesia, whereby a person can see
sounds, smell colors, or taste shapes.
Other favorites include The Fault in Our
Stars by John Green, Mr. Penumbra’s
24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, and
Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld.
In her spare time, Allison enjoys
attending musical theater productions,
playing video games, listening to podcasts,
and completing jigsaw puzzles. She
recently moved to Shaker and loves the
community and library. She likes trying
to catch up on her reading list, spending
time with her cat, Pesto, sampling the
cuisine at local restaurants, and, of course,
watching Jeopardy! See page 71 in this issue
of Shaker Life to read about her appearance
on Jeopardy.
