Jeff (ATC, MSEd) and Jeni (ATC) Frechette
Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH)
and Hartford School District (Hartford, VT)
What began as a friendship between athletic training
students in the late 1970’s at West Chester State College in
Pennsylvania eventually came full circle some 35 years later.
After enduring life’s ups and downs, and raising our families,
Jeni and I reconnected with one another, love blossomed,
and we eventually married in 2011. The one constant in
our lives over those many years keeping us connected was
athletic training.
After being taught and mentored by legendary athletic trainers,
Phil Donley, Joe Godek and Brad Taylor at West Chester,
we went our separate ways with Jeni going south and eventually
landing in Georgia, and I, north to New Hampshire, after a
stop in Virginia at James Madison for a master’s degree.
Along the way, Jeni made stops in Virginia, South Carolina
and Georgia. She served as University of Georgia’s Head
Women’s Athletic Trainer for seven years, before moving on
to high school positions. Today, she teaches middle school
health and is the Athletic Trainer for Hartford School District
in Hartford, Vermont.
I came home, so to speak, growing up in Woodstock,
Vermont, and began my career at Dartmouth College as an
assistant athletic trainer. In 1994, when Hall of Fame Athletic
Trainer Fred Kelly retired, I was fortunate to be named Head
Athletic Trainer.
Both Jeni and I are grateful for the athletic training education
we received at West Chester. It has served us well throughout
our careers. Many of our fellow student trainers from our
days at West Chester have remained lifelong friends. We
always look forward to reconnecting with them at the NATA
Annual meetings, or on the sidelines of some athletic contest.
We are also thankful for the opportunities the profession
has presented to us, the great relationships formed with
our student-athletes, fellow athletic trainers, coaches and
administrators, as well as opportunities to travel the world,
and the hundreds of great of stories accumulated throughout
our travels.
None of this would have been possible without our time at
West Chester, something we look back at with fond memories
and are forever grateful for.
