Gina Younce, MS, ATC
Bolingbrook High School (Bolingbrook, IL)
Nixon Dorvilien and I met in 2002 while I was a Graduate
Assistant Athletic Trainer at Texas Tech University and he was
a student doing clinical rotations in the Master’s Program at
Texas Tech. We never worked directly together, but developed
a deep friendship that has grown over the years.
I have worked in a suburban high school setting for 15 years,
and Nixon has worked in the NBA for over 10 years. While it
sounds like our jobs couldn’t be more different, I may be dealing
with some high-level 18 year old athletes, and Nixon may
be dealing with some elite 19 year old athletes. There truly
is a lot of crossover. And although our job sites ultimately
provide extremely different challenges and opportunities, he
is the first person I call when I need a suggestion or advice.
Similarly, I talk him through situations and am able to give
him an objective opinion on things when he has questions.
We also share knowledge with each other when we learn
something new through experience or continuing education
courses. For example, at a high school with hundreds of
athletes, our exposure to concussions is much more frequent
than an NBA team. And if I need specific guidance with a
post-op situation, Nixon has much more experience with
those situations. We use each other to network, and luckily
Nixon introduced me to the Collins staff at NATA last summer.
We have shared Carole ever since! Nixon and I both look forward
to retiring in the islands someday.
