Shaker Schools Foundation Unveils
New RaiderAthletic Center and Wrestling Room
The Shaker Heights High School weight room has recently relocated and received a
significant facelift. The new, state-of-the-art Raider Athletic Center, accessible to
all High School students in physical education and weight training courses, as well
as all of our athletic teams, has been made possible by generous donations to the
Shaker Schools Foundation from Shaker parents, alumni, community members,
Shaker Sports Boosters, and the ongoing support of the David M. Berger Fund.
The original weight room, known as The David Berger Fitness Room, was built in
memory of David Berger, Class of 1962. Berger was an Olympic weightlifter for Israel
who was tragically killed at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany. The new
Raider Athletic Center will continue to honor Berger with a plaque in his memory.
The Raider Athletic Center is in the High School’s former multipurpose room.
The larger footprint increases the number of students who can use the facility at
one time, making it accessible for physical education students and student athletes
alike. The new space is bright and outfitted with Shaker Raider logos to promote
school pride.
The new equipment includes custom-built squat racks with built-in storage for
dumbbells, kettlebells, and plates, as well as adjustable benches, glute-ham machines,
neck machines, and cable machines.
The former weight room has been
reconfigured as a dedicated wrestling
room, giving those athletes a muchdeserved
home of their own. Says
wrestling coach Will Knight, class
of 1991, “Shaker designating and
developing this space for our wrestling
team confirms what I’ve always
believed: that Shaker is supportive of
diversity and inclusion, with the goal
of providing our students with the
proper resources to achieve success. Our
program will really take off once this
process is complete.”
