Roneisha Campbell
Named Mercer Elementary
School Principal
Roneisha P. Campbell has been named
principal of Mercer Elementary School.
She joined the District on July 1.
Campbell most recently served
as assistant principal at Canton City
Schools’ Belden Leadership School and
Cedar Leadership School, where she
developed and implemented plans to
raise student achievement and to meet
the needs of students and families. At
Cedar Leadership School, she helped
implement the school’s 1:1 technology
initiative and collaborated with
classroom teachers to design engaging
technology-based learning.
She also worked closely with
diversity, equity, and inclusion
professionals in Summit County
to ensure that her school building
practices were equitable and met the
diverse needs of the school community.
Prior to her work as an
administrator, she was a classroom
teacher for 10 years, first at The

Intergenerational School in Cleveland,
where she also served as a junior cluster
director, and then as a third-grade
English Language Arts teacher at
Canton City Schools.
A Cleveland native, Campbell
earned her bachelor’s degree in
environmental studies from Oberlin
College, where she was a member of the
Women’s Basketball team and named
MVP in 2008. She holds master’s
degrees in early childhood education
and Ohio educational leadership from
Oberlin and Concordia University
Chicago. She and her husband Andre
have two daughters, eight-year-old
Raya and four-year-old Aria. The
family plans to move to Shaker Heights
in the coming months.

Michelle L. Hughes Named
New Middle School Principal
The District is pleased to announce
that Michelle L. Hughes will become
the next principal of Shaker Heights
Middle School. Hughes, who is
currently principal of Lincoln-West
School of Science and Health in
Cleveland, emerged as the strongest
candidate among a diverse group of
more than 40 applicants. She was
chosen for the position after a series
of panel interviews and meetings
with parents, faculty and staff, and
community members.
At Lincoln-West, Hughes led
the school’s inaugural class to a 96
percent graduation rate in 2018-2019.
She previously served as principal
of John F. Kennedy High School in
Cleveland, where she created a strong
school culture and academic program
focused on improving teaching
practice and measuring student
achievement gains.
Before becoming an administrator,
Hughes taught middle school
mathematics and language arts in the
Maple Heights City Schools.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in
middle childhood education from
Bowling Green State University and
a master’s degree in education from
Cleveland State University.
“Hughes has a proven track record
as a successful school leader,” said
Superintendent Dr. David Glasner. “We
are thrilled she is joining the Shaker
leadership team.”
