How to Stay Fit in Crappy Winter Weather
As summer wanes and autumn leaves shrivel, many look forward to cozy
nights indoors and holiday cheer. However, the winter months can also mean
weight gain, muscle atrophy, and loss of endurance. Staying fit in the winter
isn't easy. Outdoor activities you may have enjoyed once are less enticing in
the chilly weather. There's no need to go into full hibernation! Try implementing
the right strategies to maintain a base level of fitness.
Invest in Home Gym Equipment
Sure, a gym membership can be great, but it takes an effort to actually get
there. Are you up to the task of dragging yourself down to the gym when
it's sleeting outside? Likely not. Investing in a few home workout items can
make all the difference. A chin-up bar, a kettlebell, and dumbbell set are great
ideas. All of these items offer versatile, resistance-focused workouts that will
help you maintain muscle mass and a strong physique. A yoga mat is also
excellent for general stretching and body-weight focused exercises.
When it comes to staying fit, consistency is key. Set up a home workout space
where your workout items are accessible and inviting. The easier you make it
for yourself, the more likely it is you will actually get in a workout.
Try Out a Winter Sport
Winter may make jogging and group sports more difficult, but the colder
months offer a whole different class of sports, such as skiing and snowshoeing.
Some people even get a kick out of winter hiking. As long as you're
getting outside and moving, you're contributing to your overall fitness.
Watch Your Diet
Exercise is important for strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. Yet
when it comes to your weight, diet trumps all. It doesn't matter how much
you work out; if you're eating poorly, those pounds are going to show. The
winter season typically provides a wide range of tempting and fattening
foods. It's okay to indulge from time to time, but make sure your general
eating habits are on-point.
Remember: it's natural to gain a little bit of weight in the winter--after all,
your body is seeking extra insulation against the cold. Keep in mind that
gaining more than ten pounds is out of the range of normal. Implementing
a healthy eating regimen will make it that much easier to regain your bikini
body when summer rolls around.
Closing Thoughts
Winter nominally spans a period of three months. In some parts of the world,
winter is much longer. That's a huge chunk of your life. Regaining fitness every
spring is no easy task, and it's easy to lose to the motivation and momentum.
Putting a bit of effort to maintain fitness during the winter months will
make you feel better and help you hit the ground running once it's thawed.
