This past March Sterling Main Street marked its 10th Anniversary as an Accredited Main Street
America™ program. Much has changed over the last 10 years, both in Downtown Sterling and
in the Main Street world of downtown revitalization. The Sterling Main Street board and staff
used much of 2018 as a planning year. In December 2017 we adopted a new (actually our first)
strategic plan, and throughout 2018 set out to develop our transformation strategies. A Main
Street fundamental, transformation strategies are meant to articulate a focused, deliberate path
to revitalizing or strengthening a downtown district’s economy.
Our strategic plan has us continually looking at what we’re doing and why - annually reviewing
our events and activities; making sure our board members are actively participating in the
process, staying informed, and working to increase community involvement through both
financial contributions and volunteers; and working to tell our story better.
The Four Points committees of the Main Street Approach™ (Design, Organization, Promotions
and Economic Vitality) have been re-established to help guide our path as we continue to path
of downtown revitalization. We also have several subcommittees working on individual events
(our car show, craft beer festival and pop up markets to name a few). Committee participation is
open to anyone wanting to help us make a difference in our community, and we welcome fresh
faces to join us at any time.
Now on to the fun stuff…
Our Main Street Car Show is returning for its 6th year on Sunday, May 5th. This event
continues to grow each year and we’re excited to see what this year will bring. Held along East
2nd Street, between 1st & 2nd Avenues, the area will be filled with classics, customs, unique
rides and rat rods. Registration opens at 8 AM, judging begins at Noon, and the show closes at
3 PM. The Sauk Valley Shifters Spring Swap Meet will also be taking place in conjunction with
the Car Show. A huge thanks goes out to our event sponsors who make this show possible. Our
presenting sponsors are Sterling Commercial Roofing, US Bank, Sterling Chevrolet and CGH
Medical Center, along with additional support of Johnson Oil.
Our Pop-Up Market series will return to Dale Park on the last Thursday of each month from
May through August from 5-8 PM. May 30th will kick off this fun summer series. Come
shop for local arts & crafts, clothing, plants and more! Vendor space is still available. We’re also
lining up live music for each Market night. Ask us how you can get involved today. Once again,
the support of our sponsors is what makes these community events possible. Thanks goes out to
Verifacts and Comcast for their support of our Pop-Up Market series.
Your summertime favorite, Movies at Grandon, kicks off on Tuesday, June 4th. See our ad in
this publication for the full movie line-up.
Hot Dog Day returns on the 1st Friday of August – August 2nd. 25¢ hot dogs, sidewalk sales,
kids’ activities and more will fill the downtown, so mark your calendars now to make a family
day of it.
As always, for additional detail on all of Sterling Main Street activities or to get involved, visit
