3M™ E-A-R™ Arc Plug™ Earplugs The only earplug specifically developed in response to the recent update to NFPA 70E. One of the most commonly overlooked sections of this standard is the requirement for use of hearing protection in Category 2 and higher potential arc conditions. High level noises such as an arc blast cannot only damage a person’s hearing, but can cause concussive disorientation. The new E-A-R™ Arc Plug™ utilizes a patented Hear-Through™ filter technology. The yellow end of the Arc Plug earplug allows workers to hear conversation, signals and other critical sounds clearly – without impairment. If an arc flash occurs, the calibrated noise filter activates immediately to suppress the noise to a safer level – without dangerous delay – reducing the chance of hearing damage and concussive disorientation. Plus, with double-end versatility, workers just have to insert the plug’s red end for protection against extended exposures to continuous hazardous noises. These hazardous electrical discharges can be caused by faults in cables, in cable splices and joints, and at transformer terminals, or they may be generated by the operation of switch gear, circuit breakers and lightning arrestors. The blanket can be used for worker protection in underground vaults, switchyards, and other locations where electrical equipment poses a risk of exposure to explosive electrical discharges. They are not for use as an electrically insulating blanket. 48" x 60" and 48" x 96" sizes are available in navy blue and gray/khaki colors, and each size available in 15kA or 40kA ratings that meet the ASTM F2676 standard.
