BRONZELLA CLEVELAND EDITOR’S NOTE
Just a few of my favorite
things...
Masonry Design | 7
Happy November! As I write this, we’re all gearing up for
Thanksgiving and I have to say it’s one of my absolute
favorite holidays. I know what you’re thinking... just for the
food, and you’d be correct!
But it’s so much more than the turkey with all the trimmings,
and I do mean ALL the trimmings. It’s the time
spent with my friends and family. They say with age
comes wisdom and I can not help but agree with this old
saying. But I like to add appreciation for the simpler things.
Thinking back, as a kid all I wanted was for Thanksgiving
to be over so Santa could come with my presents. Hoping
and wishing all he would bring me were the giant toys in
the Toys R Us Christmas catalog. I’ve dated myself a bit
with that statement I’m sure. But now all I can ask for are
plenty of socks and sweaters— look at that wisdom! I
also love planning out the menu for Thanksgiving; if you
can’t already tell I’m a bit of a food snob when it comes
to the holidays. I’ll go all out with the food and the decorations.
We are also gearing up for the New Year, and my
goodness we have so much coming in the magazine that
we know you’re going to love.
I don not want to steal Dan’s thunder since he’s doing the
formal announcement. But I do want to make mention of
our two bonus issues in June and September of 2019.
These issues are called MASONRY x DESIGN. They will
be a combination of both magazines sent out to the
readers of MASONRY and MASONRY DESIGN. This is
the very first time we’ll be doing this and the content will
be for both the mason contractor and the architect and
designer.
Well I’ve talked enough about a few of my favorite things,
here’s what you’ll find in this month’s issue. Following
mine and Dan’s notes, you’ll find our announcement of our
partnership with the AIAS. We are so excited about this
relationship and cannot wait for this year’s AIAS Forum!
Dan and I will be attending, and are excited to meet the
next generation of architects and designers.
You’ll find a special outdoor design article written by our
friend Dean Marsico. You may recognize his name from
the DIY T.V. Show "Indoors Out," he and his cousin Derek
Stearns were on. They also have a new podcast. Be sure
to read Dean’s tips for designing your dream outdoor
room.
There is also an informative story on building envelopes
and how to ensure the longevity of the material in
buildings. There's also a Q&A focusing on Air and Vapor
barriers with Owens Corning Expert Tiffany Coppock.
We’ve found this format of articles extremely popular with
our sister publication. So let us know if you’d like to see
more Q&A’s in the magazine.
Our cover story features Missouri University of Science
and Technology. This technical school has a long and
interesting history on teaching architects, designers, and
civil engineers for hundreds of years.
We’re also introducing a new article series called The
Next Generation. In this new series, we will interview
younger people in the industry, sharing their stories, goals,
and ideologies of what architecture and design mean to
them. Our inaugural interview is with AIAS President, Amy
Rosen. Thank you so much for talking with us.
Make sure you stop and read the American Treasure:
Whiskey Row and Marvelous Masonry: Turkey. These
both originally ran in our sister publication, and we hope
you like them as much as the readers of MASONRY did.
As always if you have any ideas of stories or topics you’d
like to see in the magazine, don’t hesitate to reach out
to Dan or me with them. I hope everyone had a great
Thanksgiving.
Happy Holidays!
