1. First rule – don’t “freak-out” when someone you know calls and says they did
not get their materials yet. The industry has been measuring USPS
successful deliver; rule of thumb is to expect about 94% of Standard Mail to
deliver and about 99% of first class mail. Additionally, mailings (unless
saturated) are handled by a variety of postal facilities. Just like any business,
some are better at what they do than others. And sometimes the smaller
facilities can be inundated with other mail that could slow your delivery. That
doesn’t mean you should not monitor and let the USPS know when issues
arise, but patience is a key during this phase.

2. Seed your Mailing – This is the process of including addresses, in your master
list, of yourself and others who can monitor when the mail arrives. Again,
factors such as weather, mail volume, even local events, can affect delivery –
so we always recommend that you measure the effective delivery times over a
period of 6 months to one year to get a feel of how they are doing.
3. For Periodicals – Consider Red Tag Marketing: Red Tag News Publications is

a not-for-profit association of consumer and business magazines who have a
common interest in improving the delivery of their publications in the mail. In
order to do this, Red Tag has developed a network of individuals around the
country who receive free magazine subscriptions in return for reporting (by
phone or the internet) the day the magazines arrive. While listed as a nonprofit,
there will be some charges. Feel free to get more information on their

mailings as well (example: The Hauser Group)
